How Can We Make Hedera Cottage Truly Off Grid?

14 Jun, 2025

Well then, here we are again, cup of Yorkshire Tea in hand and a glint of defiance in the eye. The question for today: can we make Hedera Cottage truly off-grid? Not just in the romantic Instagrammy sense of fairy lights in a yurt – we’re talking proper no-mains, no-grid, no-problem living.

Now, before the National Grid starts twitching and the neighbours suspect I’ve gone full doomsday prepper, let’s get something straight. This isn’t about tinfoil hats. It’s about resilience, sustainability, and the strange pleasure of sticking two fingers up to standing charges.

So what would it actually take to cut the cord?

1. Electricity – The Power Struggle

We’ve got no gas or oil, which already gives us a head start. The plan’s to add a battery system so we can store off-peak leccy, but if we want to break free entirely we’ll need to generate our own. That means:

  • Solar panels, probably roof-integrated or ground-mounted, depending on how friendly the sun feels up here.
  • Wind turbine? Could work – but only if the planners allow and the neighbours don’t object to a whirligig spoiling their sheep-watching.
  • Battery storage – already on the cards, but we’ll need a chunky setup if we’re not to resort to candles by February.
  • Back-up generator, ideally biofuel or something equally smug-sounding, just in case the moors throw us a month of cloud and drizzle.

2. Water – Falling from the Sky, Rising from the Ground

We’re on mains water now, but for full autonomy we’d need:

  • Rainwater harvesting, filtered, treated, and ideally stored in a big old tank under the garden.
  • Well or borehole, if the geology’s kind. Not cheap, but it’s a one-off. And it just sounds cool.

If Lexi and Kira start bringing back bottles of Evian from the stream, we’ll know it’s time to upgrade the filters.

3. Heating – The Warm Embrace of Innovation

No gas. No oil. No problem?

  • Air source heat pump, already being considered. Works well with…
  • Underfloor heating, if the floating floor cooperates and doesn’t fall in.
  • Wood stove, because nothing says “off grid” like a fire you have to sweet-talk with kindling every morning. Bonus points if it’s one of those ones with a little oven on top for baking potatoes and drying socks.

4. Cooking – Beyond the Kettle

Electric hob or induction’s the plan, but off-grid that means:

  • Solar + battery needs to cover this
  • Or a good old wood-fired range like an Esse or Rayburn. Charming, infuriating, and brilliant all at once. Just like living off-grid.

5. Internet – The One Grid We Can’t Quit

Let’s be honest: some things will stay on-grid. Like work. So we’ll probably keep:

  • Starlink, which is as close to “off grid WiFi” as you can get without climbing a mast yourself.

Conclusion – Can It Be Done?

Yes. Probably. Eventually. With money, planning, a few compromises, and more Yorkshire Tea than should be legally consumed.

But most of all, it takes a mindset. The kind that sees a storm coming and says: let’s make sure the candles are where we left them, just in case.

Hedera Cottage may yet become the self-reliant eccentric it dreams of being. One solar panel at a time.

How to Teach Your Mac to Spot Rabbits (and Other Garden Visitors)

Most folks with a trail-cam know the problem: you get thousands of clips and photos, and 90% of them are wind-blown grass, pigeons’ bottoms, or the neighbour’s cat. Lovely, but who’s got time to sift through all that? At Hedera Cottage we built a “robot librarian”...

You know that little shed full of humming boxes and blinking lights? Turns out the daft human’s been teaching them to recognise me garden visitors. Every day, the trail-cams spew out thousands of clips and photos — fox-coloured blurs, pigeon bottoms, the odd neighbour...
