Slate Is Dead: Why We Might Rip Off Our Entire Roof for Something Better

25 Jun, 2025

There’s a sacred rule when it comes to rural property renovation:

“Don’t touch the roof.”

It’s uttered with the same fearful reverence as “Don’t wake the baby” or “Never tell a Yorkshireman you prefer Lancashire cheese.”

But here at Hedera Cottage, we like to question things. Especially if they’re expensive, heavy, and suspiciously smug.

And that’s where slate comes in.

🎩 The Prestige of Slate

Oh, it looks lovely, don’t get me wrong. Flat grey biscuits of geological age and emotional baggage, laid out like the roof’s gone to a funeral. Every self-respecting heritage buff will tell you it’s the only choice for “character properties.”

But let’s have a proper look under the bonnet, shall we?

❄️ The Problems We’re (Possibly) Going to Rip Off

1. Weight

The roof’s got more mass than a minor planet. Every time it rains, it sounds like the gods are emptying a gravel bin on your head. The structural timbers are groaning like an arthritic spaniel on a cold morning.

2. Insulation

Slate is about as thermally efficient as a Ryvita. It laughs in the face of your eco dreams. Want to keep the heat in? Tough. You’ll be stoking the stove like a Victorian navvy.

3. Solar Panels

Mounting solar on slate is like trying to attach a jet engine to a porcelain teapot. Drilling through it is a crime punishable by grumpy neighbours and the ghost of the roofer who first laid it. Integrated panels? Only if you remortgage the dog.

🪜 So What’s the Big Plan Then?

Here’s the (possibly outrageous) idea:

We’re considering taking the whole lot off. Yes, really.

Stripping it back to the bones, raising the roofline (mezzanine dream, anyone?) and going for a lightweight, insulated, solar-ready replacement.

Something clever. Something breathable. Something that doesn’t sigh dramatically every time it rains.

🌞 Enter: Solar Shingles or Standing Seam Metal

These newfangled roof solutions might not have the romance of slate, but they’ve got brains. Integrated solar. Recycled materials. Breathable membranes. Passive heat gain. All the clever tricks that slate just can’t be bothered with.

And no, we’re not planning on putting corrugated plastic up there. We’ve still got some standards, love.

💬 Final Thoughts

This isn’t about hating slate (well… maybe a bit). It’s about looking the old cottage in the eye and saying:

“We love you, but we can do better.”

So yes, we might tear off a perfectly functional (ish) traditional slate roof… all in the name of comfort, efficiency, and future-proofing.

And if that upsets the local preservation society, well, they’re welcome to come round and help us carry the slates.

With a wheelbarrow. And a flask.

How to Teach Your Mac to Spot Rabbits (and Other Garden Visitors)

Most folks with a trail-cam know the problem: you get thousands of clips and photos, and 90% of them are wind-blown grass, pigeons’ bottoms, or the neighbour’s cat. Lovely, but who’s got time to sift through all that? At Hedera Cottage we built a “robot librarian”...

The Rabbits, the Hedgehogs, and the Robot Librarian

You know that little shed full of humming boxes and blinking lights? Turns out the daft human’s been teaching them to recognise me garden visitors. Every day, the trail-cams spew out thousands of clips and photos — fox-coloured blurs, pigeon bottoms, the odd neighbour...
